Psalm 1: The Blessed Life | September 22, 2019

 

1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

 

2  but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

 

3  He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

 

4  The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

 

5  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

 

6  for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish. (ESV)

 

The three “C’s” of the blessed life:

  1. CHARACTER
  2. CONNECTION
  3. Confidence

The Opposite Effect | Philippians 12-18a
Bad things… good people… good things! (Gen 50:20)
Those who didn’t believe… do believe! | Philippians 4:22
Those who did believe… are inspired!
Sure there’s some opposition, but no worries!
What does it matter… I rejoice anyway!

 

We’re In This Together | Philippians 18b-26
I need your prayers and the Holy Spirit
I expect to persevere no matter what!
If I live… great! If I die… even better!
You will have more joy if I live… and you need me.
I’m convinced, therefore , that I will live.

 

Whatever happens… follow me! | Philippians 27-30
Live lives worthy of the Gospel!
There must be unity… whether I’m with you or not.
Don’t be afraid of those who oppose you.
This will be a sign to them!
Jesus made it possible to be saved by Him, but also to suffer for Him
I’ve been where you are…
I’m still there…
Let’s make sure we still have unity.

They Went Way Back
Philippi was founded by Philip II…
                         father of Alexander the Great
Augustus Caesar defeated Brutus and Cassius there after they assassinated Julius Caesar
It was a Roman Colony for retired military
Philippi was Paul’s first European church

 

It Started with a Vision | Acts 16
The Man of Macedonia
Lead to faithful women
Out of poverty… generosity!

 

But We’re a Little Worried Now…
We heard you were in prison
We sent you a gift with Epaphroditus
Please send us Timothy

 

Paul Was Worried, Too
How could he encourage them?
They were going to be disappointed
They were losing hope
They were deeply divided
Their focus was on their circumstances
How could he encourage them, while also confronting them in love?
They needed to be like Jesus

Key Question:   What were Caleb’s convictions which enabled him to follow God wholeheartedly?

 

Conviction #1:   God is always true to His word, therefore I should believe everything He says. 

 

Conviction #2:  God’s actions are always right, therefore I can always trust Him.

 

Conviction #3:  God is faithful, therefore, I must act with confidence pursuing what He calls me to do.

Jesus told them about this before going to the Cross
The Law of Moses—the “how to” of relating to God
The Prophets—the warnings from God
The Psalms—our worship of God, from the heart
Have you heard of these things?
Can you do them? Perfectly?

 

It’s God’s Move First…
He opened their minds
Jesus was meant to die and rise again for us
Repentance and forgiveness… preached!
Ambassadors assigned… authority granted
Power from on high

 

It’s Our Move Now…
Repentance and forgiveness… have you?
Are you a failed Ambassador?
Peter’s failure predicted… and forgiven…
Paul’s persecution seen… and forgiven…
Has our failure been seen… and forgiven?\
God entrusted this ministry to us | 2 Timothy 2:1-7
Seven churches were given another chance
Does God want to give you another chance?
Does God want to give Crossroads another chance?
It’s our move now…
